This application concerns HIsarna, a new technology to make steel. In short it consists of a reactor where iron ore is introduced at the top. The ore is liquefied in a cyclone at a high temperature and drips on the bottom of the reactor where coal powder is injected. The coal powder reacts with the molten ore to form liquid pig iron as a basic material for the production of high-quality steel. The gas that HIsarna emits is concentrated CO2.
The technology makes a number of pre-processing steps superfluous. This results in a huge increase in efficiency. It reduces energy consumption, reduces CO2 emissions by 20% and reduces emissions of particulate matter, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide by 60% to 80%. However, since HIsarna places less strict demands on the quality of the solid reductant pool (like cokes and pulverized coal), there is an opportunity to improve the process even further by using biomass derived reductants. In this project we will focus on handling, storage and lab-scale combustion simulations to assess the suitability of biomass as reductant.
