In the coming decades, the global population will increase to 9 billion, with a concomitant rise in food consumption per capita and an increase in energy and chemicals requirements. Microalgae are photosynthetic microorganisms with higher productivities than agricultural crops, do not require agricultural land and have the capacity of using CO2 and a variety of different water sources including fresh, brackish, saline. Microalgae can produce a wide range of co-products for the chemical, energy and food industry.

Innovative, natural, and sustainable raw material supply-chains for food ingredients from microalgae will contribute to sustainable solutions in for challenges to food scarcity and the security of supply associated with food ingredients. TKI Polar will establish the proof of principle on the use of polar lipids from photoautotrophic microalgae in food products.

Goal: The PPP, TKI Polar will focus on a dedicated R&D programme of WU and URDV to establish proof of principle on the use of polar lipids from photoautotrophic microalgae in food products.

The specific objectives of TKI Polar are:

  • Proof of principle of effectiveness microalgal polar lipids in food products
  • Estimate production costs at commercial scale
